Music Career

NBA Youngboy started making music at just 14 years old, and while he didn't start making a large amount of money from his music for years later, he is now making money off some of his older music.

This Louisiana rapper produced his first mixtape in the year 2015, titled Life Before Fame. After this first mixtape, he released a few more entitled Mind of a Menace 1, 2, and Before I Go.

His 2016 mixtape, 38 Baby, is the one where he started getting more attention from other rappers and music lovers.

One week after releasing 38 Baby, he released a sixth mixtape called Mind of a Menace 3. Later on, in 2016, he re-released two of his former mixtapes from jail. He re-released Before I Go and Mind of a Menace 3.

Upon leaving jail, he released his first single, not a mixtape called “Untouchable.” He started making music videos for his songs like “41,” which featured several notable rappers that helped him gain popularity. In August of 2017, he released a mixtape called AI Youngboy, and several singles like “No Smoke” and “Untouchable” were charting on the Billboard Charts.

In 2018, he released a single, “Outside Today,” which ended up being his top charting song. Shortly after this single's release, he announced his first studio album, Until Death Call My Name, and that he signed with Atlantic Records.

Even though he was arrested in 2018, he managed to release another mixtape, Master The Day Of Judgement, and then four more EPs through the summer of 2018. Each EP had four tracks that were later compiled into a 16-track compilation. He released two more mix tapes in 2018, Decided and Realer.

By 2019, NBA Youngboy became one of Youtube's Top Music Artists, making him one of the most-watched musicians across genres. The consistency with which he released music helped him earn his spot on their list. NBA Youngboy released much of his music exclusively on the platform.

He made it to the 9th spot on the best-selling artist list on the 2019 Billboard Mid-Year Charts and ranked 7th on audio streams. He had to take a break from releasing and recording music in 2019 when he was on house arrest, but he released his single “Aptly Titled” and “house Arrest Tingz” when he was off.

In October 2019, he released a song with Juice WRLD, “Bandit,” which ended up being the other rapper's last song before his passing. It reached number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it his most successful single.

Following the single “Bandit,” he released a mixtape called AI Youngboy 2, which debuted in the number one spot on the Billboard 200. It accumulated more than 144 million on-demand streams during the first week of its release.

In early 2020, his mixtape Still Flexin, Still Steppin came out. It was another high-ranking mixtape, appearing at the number two spot on the Billboard 200. He continued to release mixtapes throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, like 38 Baby 2 and his second studio album, Top.

His fourth solo project came at the end of 2020 Until I Return. It was only released on Youtube and had no featured guests.

His third studio album came in 2021, with several singles, even though he was incarcerated on firearm charges.

His most recent mixtape came in 2022, Colors. He's no longer with Atlantic Records and is currently signed with Motown and is continuing to produce music with his record label and exclusively for Youtube.

How NBA Youngboy Got On This Path

How NBA Youngboy Got On This Path

NBA Younboy, born Kentrell DeSean Gaulden, was born in 1999 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He had what some would call a rough childhood growing up. His neck got broken while wrestling as a toddler. He had to live in a head brace up until his spine healed, but permanent scars were left on his forehead.

His grandmother raised him mainly because his dad was in prison for 55 years. At the age of 14, he dropped out of high school and started producing and making music with a microphone that he bought from the local Walmart.

Two years after he started making music with his Walmart microphone, he was stuck in a juvenile detention center due to robbery. During this time, he began writing the lyrics that would appear on his debut project. He spent the entire six months working on the first project that he would independently release after he served his time.

Once released from the juvenile detention center, NBA Youngboy’s grandmother died of a heart attack. He moved into a house with a fellow rapper and friend, OG3 Three Never Broke Again.

While living together, the two worked on their projects and turned to a life of crime to help them pay for studio time. It's not officially known what exactly the two rappers did criminally to pay for the studio time, but they've publicly admitted that they did break some laws to get the money they needed to make their musical dreams come true.

His first official mixtape came out in 2015, titled Life Before Fame. From there, NBA Youngboy released several other mixtapes within the year. Before officially signing with Atlantic Records in 2017, he released a total of eight mixtapes and tracks that helped him gain what some would call a cult following.

His 2016 mixtape, 38 Baby, really put him on the map when it came to the hip hop and rap genre. It featured several other Baton Rouge rappers. Some people attribute a lot of his early success and rise in fame to his “song-for-song rap beef” with Scotty Cain of Baton Rouge.

While it's not sure whether there was ever actual violence between the two rappers, it's safe to say that their rap battles helped both of them rise in popularity within the rap community and in Baton Rouge.

In 2016, well before NBA Youngboy was officially signed to Atlantic Records, he was arrested for his association with an attempted first-degree murder charge. He didn't let his time in jail stop him from working on his music. He re-released two of his prominent mixtapes, Before I Go and Mind of a Menace 3, from prison.

Upon being released from jail in May of 2017, he released a single that put him on the map for record labels. He was officially signed to his first record label towards the end of 2017 and started having songs on the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot 100.
